Nepal has qualified for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup for the third time. Nepal booked their spot in the Twenty20 World Cup just hours before they are scheduled to play Oman in the Super Six of the Asia-East Asia Pacific Qualifiers on Wednesday. Nepal and Oman qualified for the Twenty20 World Cup after both teams achieved favorable results in the ongoing tournament in Muscat, Oman.

Nepal, which is unbeaten with 8 points, has also reached the top of the qualifiers with a comprehensive 38-run win in the evening match against Oman. Nepal, which is close to the championship title, will play its remaining match against Samoa on Friday. 

Nepal and Oman have managed to qualify for the World Cup for the second consecutive time after Qatar defeated Japan by 3 wickets and UAE defeated Samoa by 77 runs in the day match on Wednesday. Nepal and Oman had qualified for the World Cup by finishing in the top two positions in the Asian qualifiers held in Kathmandu in 2023. Nepal is playing in the World Cup for the third time.

Muscat is the same place where Nepal failed to qualify for the Twenty20 World Cup and Asia Cup respectively after losing in the semi-finals of the ACC Men's Premier Cup in 2022. Both times, Nepal lost to UAE in the semi-finals. This time, Nepal came close to the Twenty20 World Cup after defeating the same UAE by 1 run in the first match of the Super Sixes.

Then, Nepal defeated Qatar by 5 runs on Monday, leaving only the formality of entering the Twenty-20 World Cup. Earlier, Nepal had defeated Kuwait and Japan in the group stage and reached the Super Six with 2 bonus points. Nepal opened the door to the Twenty-20 World Cup from Bangladesh in 2014. In its return to the Twenty-20 World Cup after 10 years, Nepal played the World Cup held in the United States and the West Indies last year. The Twenty-20 World Cup began in 2007. Nepal has been playing in the qualifiers since 2007. 

The 10th edition of the ICC Twenty-20 World Cup, which includes 20 nations, is being held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Nepal and Oman are the 18th and 19th countries to qualify for this edition, respectively. India and Sri Lanka have qualified directly for the Twenty-20 World Cup as they are the host nations. Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, USA, West Indies and Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan from the ICC rankings had already secured their places in the global event to be held in India and Sri Lanka from the last edition of the Twenty20 World Cup.

Canada from the American region, Netherlands and Italy from Europe and Zimbabwe and Namibia from Africa had qualified for this Twenty-Twenty World Cup. The tournament being held in Oman will determine one more team to qualify for the Twenty20 World Cup. UAE, Samoa, Qatar and Japan are likely to be among them. Nepal will play the final match of the Super Six against Samoa on Friday. If Nepal defeats Samoa in the last two matches, it will win the Twenty20 World Cup Asia-East Asia Pacific qualifiers. 

‘We knew we had qualified for the World Cup even before we played Oman. But we were playing for the title, so it was important to win the match against Oman and go to the top of the points table,’ Nepal captain Rohit Poudel told the official broadcaster, ‘I am feeling very happy right now, which cannot be described in words, because we have been dreaming of this for the last 1 year. We will continue to play better than this and will do even better in the World Cup.’
