At present, six highways across the country are completely blocked and 169 road sections are operating in one-way traffic, according to the Road Department. According to the department, traffic has been blocked due to landslides and floods have cut roads at various places.

Spokesperson of the department, Prabhat Kumar Jha, informed that work is being done so that traffic can be operated on Kathmandu-Dhulikhel-Dolalghat-Khadichour-Kodari (Araniko Highway) till this evening. "During the month of December, the road improvement works are being carried out in full swing for easy and safe travel for the common people going out of the valley and entering the valley," he said.

The Prithvi Highway, which was blocked due to landslides, opened on Sunday evening, but it will remain closed for two hours this afternoon as the road needs to be cleaned, he said. According to the road department, among the blocked highways are Thori-Bhandara-Malekhu, Galchi-Trishuli-Betravati-Mailung-Syfrubbensi-Rasuwagadhi. The highway was blocked because the river cut the road after the flood on July 14th from the Chinese territory. At present, efforts are being made to open the blocked road using excavators and loaders, the department said.

Rani-Viratnagar-Itahari-Dharan-Dhankuta-Hile, Leghuwaghat-Tumlingtar-Khandbari-Num-Kimathanka (Koshi highway) are also completely blocked, the department says. The department said that the diversion has been washed away in the Varun river and the slope work is still pending in the construction of the bridge and the diversion could not be restored due to the increase in water flow.

Chatra-Moolghat-Majhitar-Amarapurdanda-Ganeshchowk (Tamor Corridor) is also completely blocked. The Department said that the Ranipul Belly built on the Tamor River was swept away by the flood that occurred after the incessant rains on July 6th, and that Remit Hydro was re-constructing it. Initiatives are being taken for the construction of Eli Bridge.

Thori-Bhandara-Malekhu, Galchi-Trishuli-Betravati-Mailung-Syfrubensi-Rasuwagadhi road section has also been blocked due to the huge flood from China. The department said that equipment has been mobilized to open the blocked road. According to the

department, Rani-Viratnagar-Itahari-Dharan-Dhankuta-Hile, Leghuwaghat-Tumlingtar-Khandbari-Num-Kimathanka (Koshi highway) and Kathmandu-Dhulikhel-Dolalghat-Khadichour-Kodari (Araniko highway) are also completely blocked. The department said that the highway is being improved.

The Senior Vice President of the National Federation of Nepal Transport Professionals, Saroj Sitaula, said that the number of passengers leaving the valley during the festival is increasing and emphasized that the road improvement work should be completed quickly to create a comfortable environment for the vehicles returning from outside the valley.

Amit Kumar Sharma, information officer of the road department, informed that four lakh square meters of potholes have to be repaired across the country and work is being done to improve the potholes targeted at ten. "Road improvement work is being done by giving special priority to highways where there is more traffic," he said.
