What you should know

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is going on a visit to China from Saturday. Prime Minister Oli, who is going to participate in the 25th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the 'SCO Plus' meeting, is also meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the conference.

Oli's visit to China is viewed with importance in the background of India and China agreeing to resume trade through Nepali land Lipulek last week. Nepal has formally protested against the agreement made by India and China. That is why there is interest everywhere as to how the Nepali side will use the high-level meeting on the sidelines of the conference.

The SCO meeting is being held on August 15-16 in Tianjin, China. Nepal is about to participate in SCO as a 'dialogue partner'. Nepal is not a member state of SCO. Oli will address the 'SCO Plus' meeting. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, it is mentioned that Prime Minister Oli will meet Chinese President Xi. On the occasion of the conference, Prime Minister Oli will have a "sideline" meeting with the leaders of other participating countries.

Prime Minister Oli will meet Chinese Vice President Han Chang in Beijing on August 17. According to the ministry, Prime Minister Oli will also participate in the 80th anniversary event of China's victory against the Japanese invasion to be held in Beijing on the same day. This is Oli's second visit to China after becoming the Prime Minister last year. Last year, Oli visited China on 17-20 December.

Leaders close to the Prime Minister say that Oli is preparing to raise the issue of Lipulek agreement in the courtesy and 'sideline' talks as he will also meet with the Indian Prime Minister. Tank Karki, Nepal's former ambassador to China, says that Nepal should be able to use the forum to its advantage. He said that the opportunity of a bilateral meeting with the Chinese President and the Indian Prime Minister should be used to raise the Lipulek issue.

'The agreement between India and China to increase trade through Lipulek has caused a strong reaction in Nepal, the whole country is unanimous on that,' he says, 'Nepal's concern should be clearly stated in the meeting with the high leaders of China and India.'
