Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar has said that the number of women policemen in the police force should be made 20 percent. While inaugurating the First Women's Police Conference, which started today at Police Headquarters Naxal, he said that although the constitution provides for 33 percent representation of women in every field, it will take time to achieve the same.

'We have arranged the reservation. But that situation is not going to be fulfilled right now," he said, "The government has arranged 33 percent reservation for women. This is a long-term program. It will be completed gradually.'

He said that only about 20 percent of police officers are women. The government is ready to make mention of the presence of women in the police. The law provides for reservation. Accordingly, necessary policies and programs should be made and implemented. I am ready for that,' he said.
