Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvisubba Gurung has emphasized that since the mother tongue of the Gurung community is disappearing, the mother tongue preservation and transmission campaign should start from home.

Minister Gurung said that the threat of extinction of Gurung language and culture is increasing due to migration at the public program of Gurung language magazine 'Tamu Kaye' organized by Nepal Pragya Pratishthan here on Wednesday. He said that the existence of a community is reflected in its language and culture, so the Gurung community should take special measures to preserve and transmit their mother tongue.

'Protection of any language starts at home', he said, 'It is important to start a campaign to protect the language and the original culture associated with it. If we don't emphasize on preservation and transmission, the art, culture and language of our ancestors will disappear.'   Thanking

Foundation for publishing a magazine in Tamu language for the first time, Minister Gurung emphasized that although this initiative is positive, the family and community should be the basis to keep the main language alive. He said, 'It is history for the establishment to publish a newspaper. However, real language conservation should start at home and it should be passed down.'

Minister Gurung mentioned that the main purpose of bringing a federal democratic republican governance system is to practice egalitarian society and inclusive character. He complained that the Gurung community could not make full use of this opportunity, stating that reservation and inclusive policies were introduced with the aim of making everyone feel ownership in the federal government system. He suggested that the Gurung community should make use of the opportunity of inclusion given by the constitution to reach the mainstream of the state.

The Vice President of the Tribal Upliftment Foundation, Resham Gurung, said that through the foundation, the work of documenting the language, culture, art and lifestyle of the tribes is being done. Emphasizing that free public service training should be conducted to increase the access of the tribe to civil service, he said that the low presence of the Gurung community in the civil service is a matter of concern.

Bhupal Rai, the chancellor of Nepal Pragya Foundation, said that it is necessary to publish newspapers in the mother tongue to create a common feeling for the foundation of all communities. The foundation expressed its commitment to continue this campaign even if it is delayed.  Rajan Mukarung, Head of the Mother Language Department of

Foundation, informed that among the various mother tongues in Nepal, mother tongue magazines of four languages have been published so far.
