The Nepal Sea Export Paithari Association has demanded diplomatic initiatives and infrastructure arrangements for the opening of other ports to facilitate trade by land, as the two trade ports in the north, Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani, are closed every year during the rainy season due to floods.

The movement of people and commercial goods through the Rasuwagadhi crossing was stopped after the Miteri bridge connecting Nepal and China was swept away by the flood on 24th June. Tatopani canal of Sindhupalchok has been blocked for two weeks due to floods.

Due to natural disasters, hundreds of containers and trucks carrying goods imported to Nepal were stranded on the road due to the sudden closure of the border crossing.

Since it is necessary to open other ports to facilitate import-export with China, the association has requested the government to make those ports operational immediately through diplomatic initiatives and arrange infrastructure for other alternative ports.

The Development Committee of the Legislature Parliament had studied the condition of the northern border crossings in 2072 and suggested that Korla and Olangchungola border crossings could be brought into operation.

High officials of Nepal and China governments agreed to open seven northern border crossings during bilateral discussions a decade ago. Those checkpoints were Tatopani, Korla in Mustang, Kimathangka in Sankhuwasabha, Lamabagar in Dolakha, Olangchungola in Taplejung, Amjapas in Mugu, Yari Hilsa in Humla and Larke in Gorkha.

Korla Naka can be operated for 12 months. The infrastructure towards China is also ready at Korla border crossing. The road has reached Korala towards Nepal. The study has shown that trade between the two countries can be conducted through the Olangchungola border crossing in Taplejung. To open those points for commercial purposes as soon as possible and other points suitable for commercial purposes  The association has drawn the attention of the government to prepare the environment for bringing it into operation.

China is Nepal's second largest partner in import trade. Statistics show that trade with China is moving towards the northern border with the recent infrastructure development. According to the statistics of the Customs Department, in the financial year 2081/82, goods worth more than 50 billion rupees were imported from Tatopani and more than 85 billion rupees from Rasuwagadhi crossing.

By drawing attention to the fact that due to the closure of both ports for the import of festive goods from China, business activities will not increase relatively, general consumers will be deprived of getting goods at a reasonable price and the government will lose revenue, and the union has demanded immediate initiatives to open more ports in the north for commercial purposes.
