1 thousand 359 seats have been added to study medical education. The meeting of the Medical Education Commission held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has decided to increase the number of seats in most of the private medical colleges.
The number of seats in government medical colleges has not been increased. Private medical colleges have been bargaining since the time of giving subsistence allowance to resident doctors at postgraduate level to increase the number of seats at undergraduate level. Medical education experts have said that the number of seats has been increased due to their pressure.
Last year MBBS seats were increased by 459 from 2140 to 2635. Most of the medical colleges which have been teaching students in 100 seats have got seats at the rate of 130 quota. Although the Medical Education Commission has claimed that the number of seats has been increased as per the standards, experts are worried about the decline in quality. Sri Krishna Giri, the former vice-chairman of the Commission, said that the seats were increased in a planned manner on the instructions of the Prime Minister rather than according to the standards.
BDS has increased by 50 seats. In which a total of 625 seats have been determined. According to the Commission, 440 seats have been increased to 2430 seats in B.Sc Nursing. 1 thousand 62 seats have been determined in BNS by adding 122 seats.
For the first time MBBS seats have been allotted in Purvanchal University and Madan Bhandari Institute of Health Sciences in Hetounda. They got 50/50 seats. In Purvanchal, Koshi Hospital and Madan Bhandari Foundation have started teaching medical education in collaboration with Hatunda Hospital.
While the number of seats in private medical colleges has increased, seats in government medical colleges including Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medical Education, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, and Patan Institute of Health Sciences have not been increased. One of the members said that Prime Minister Oli stopped the commission meeting saying that the financial resources to increase the seats were not guaranteed.
Kathmandu, Chitwan, Universal, KIST, Virat, Nobel and Nepal Medical College seats have been increased to 130 seats, according to the Commission. Similarly, 120 seats of Manipal and Gandaki Medical Colleges and 90 seats of Devdah have been provided. Seats for nursing have also increased in these medical colleges.
