Nepal Media Society has submitted suggestions along with demands for amendment of the proposed Media Council Bill.

On Wednesday, while submitting a memorandum to the chairman of the education, health and information technology committee of the House of Representatives, the society has also put forward suggestions for amending the proposed bill. The society demands that a new draft be prepared saying that many clauses of the

bill are against the spirit of the constitution and the international recognition of press freedom. It is said in the memorandum, "The current bill should be withdrawn and a new draft should be prepared based on the global recognition of press freedom and the suggestions of stakeholders."

Society has demanded that government interference in the formation of the press council, the appointment of officials and the financial rights should be completely stopped . Similarly, it is suggested to develop a mechanism to encourage self-regulation instead of punitive action.  The

bill has been passed by the National Assembly on January 28.
