Bharat Kumar Thapa, the suspended mayor of Sarlahi's Bagmati municipality, has been sentenced to 8 years in prison in a corruption case. The suspended Mayor Thapa, who has already been found guilty in the corruption case filed by the Abuse of Authority Investigation Commission, was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment by a special court on Thursday.

Similarly, it has been decided that a fine of Rs 10 crore 9 lakh 78 thousand 299 will be recovered from Thapa.

In the same corruption case, the then Chief Administrative Officer of Bagmati Municipality, Bimal Kumar Pokharel, and Engineer Sagar Paudel, who was also the head of the municipality's planning, were also sentenced to 8 years imprisonment, a fine of Rs.

In the charge of misappropriation of revenue from the sale of construction materials under the guise of constructing Bharattal and various related physical structures in Bagmati Municipality, the Authority made District Coordination Committee Chairman Methur Chaudhary, Mayor Thapa, Deputy Mayor Leelakumari Moktan, Chief Administrative Officer Pokharel, Engineer Paudel and Accounts Officer Vishwaraj Pokharel as defendants and imposed a fine of Rs. A corruption case was filed in the special court on 29th June 2081 with demands. 

The bench of special chairman Judge Teknarayan Kunwar and member (judge) Muraribabu Shrestha and Vidur Koirala found Mayor Thapa, the then Chief Administrative Officer Pokharel and Engineer Paudel guilty and acquitted the other three. 

On Thursday, the special court determined the punishment against the three and ordered that the amount demanded be equal to 8 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. Apart from the case of damage to public property, the authority also filed a corruption case against Thapa on charges of abusing public office and acquiring illegal wealth. In the said case, the special court found guilty on July 21 and sentenced Thapa to one year in prison and a fine of Rs 3445 lakh 22 thousand 387.
