91 percent of rice planting has been completed across the country. Compared to the same period last year, planting was eight percent more. Planting has been completed in an area of about 12 lakh 54 thousand hectares of land across the country.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, about 1.4 million hectares of land is suitable for agriculture.

Ministry's information officer Mahanand Joshi informed that 99.7 percent of the planting was completed in Far West and 98 percent in Karnali and Lumbini provinces. According to him, it is estimated that 98 percent planting will be done by the second week of August.

The least 76 percent planting has been completed in Madhes province. Last year, 97 percent planting was done in Madhes. Joshi said that since the monsoon is active here a little later, the percentage of sowing is the lowest. He said that due to the lack of rain in Madhes, planting has been affected.

According to Joshi, information officer of the ministry, Terai region is considered suitable in terms of rice production and area. Stating that the productivity of paddy has increased from that area and contributes 70 percent of the total production, he informed that 30 percent of the production is in the hilly areas.

In the financial year 2080/81, 57 lakh 24 thousand 234 metric tons of rice was produced. He said that about 3.5 million metric tons of edible rice will be made from 6 million metric tons of rice estimated to be produced in the country this year.

Joshi mentioned that due to adverse weather conditions, natural calamities, heavy rains and lack of rains, planting is delayed in some areas. He said that it is estimated that production will increase due to the development of knowledge, skills, technology and advanced varieties of seeds.
