MP Anjan Shakya said that Nepal should now focus on production and not on foreign subsidies. She also said that Nepal's image and reputation on the international stage will be raised to new heights when Nepal is upgraded from a least developed country to a developing country.
MP Shakya said this in the discussion held on Wednesday in the National Assembly on "Study Report on Upgrading Nepal from Least Developed Country to Developing Country, 2081". The report prepared by the Sustainable Development Subcommittee of the Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly is being discussed. Shakya is the coordinator of the said sub-committee.
MP Shakya said, "In 2026, our country Nepal is rising from the list of least developed countries and joining the ranks of developing countries". It is not just a technological upgrade for any nation. This is a sign of our national self-respect, ability and bright future.
Nepal has achieved this achievement by meeting global standards such as per capita income, human wealth and economic risk, MP Shakya said. With this upgradation, some of the benefits we are getting as a least developed country will be cut. Some challenges may increase in trade and some may decrease in international cooperation . However, every challenge also opens the door of opportunity," she said. "When the credit rating of our country improves, it will create a more favorable environment for foreign investment. The support received from multilateral organizations such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank will not be significantly affected and there are strong grounds for continuing the support through bilateral agreements with our friendly countries such as India, China, and the UK. We have to work hard.'
MP Shakya said that along with the upgradation, the chapter of dependence should be ended and we should move towards self-reliance. Our way forward should be focused on production and not on subsidies. By attracting investment in infrastructure development, energy, tourism and agriculture, we should stop the migration of our young and intelligent talent abroad by creating jobs in the country,' she said, 'for this, our diplomacy should be more active and result-oriented . Our embassies should play an effective role for new bilateral agreements, understandings, bilateral trade and investment agreements.
