What you should know

So far, 68 cubs have been born at the Elephant Breeding and Training Center of Chitwan National Park, Khorsor Sauraha. The center was started in 2044 by bringing 20 elephants from India, Thailand and Myanmar.

6 male and 14 female elephants were brought to the center from that country. Manipuran Chaudhary, the head of the center, informed that the elephant gave birth for the first time in 2049 Chait. Since then, 68 cubs have been born and seven have died.

According to Chaudhary, 39 males and 29 females were born so far. He said that now there are 58 elephants in Chitwan National Park. There are 22 elephants in the breeding center. Among them, 9 mothers and 6 out of 13 children have been trained and kept. They are also being sent to the post in a few days,' he said.

Chowdhury said that 7 babies born recently are in the center. After being born and trained here, they are sent to posts in different places to protect the park.

Chhawa, who was born here, has been named in honor of various distinguished people. Earlier it was named after the king and members of the royal family. The new camp has been named in honor of Ved Bahadur Khadka, the conservation officer who was working in the park and passed away recently.

In honor of Khadka, who played a significant role in the conservation of the park for a long time, the chhawa born in the center has been named Vedgaj. According to Chowdhury, there is a tradition of performing Nawaran on the 12th day after the birth of Chhawa.

According to Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pant, chief conservation officer of the park, Vedgaj is the third child of Demokratikali. Twenty-two-year-old Demokratikali gave birth eight years ago to Budhgaj and four years ago to Swarnakali.

Conservation Officer Pant informed that Rameshgaj was named after Ramesh Choudhary, an elephant who died after being attacked by a tiger while grazing elephants three years ago, Sheshchandragaj was named after senior game scout Sheshchandra Chaudhary, who was killed 11 years ago in a clash with smugglers inside the park. It is assumed that the children born here are their children,' he said.
