What you should know
After 14 months of leading the government, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is going to visit India. He is going to visit India from August 31 at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. The official announcement of the tour is yet to be made.
According to the officials of the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi, Oli has been invited to visit India and the date of the visit has also been agreed upon.
Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri informed that the visit has been confirmed and the date will be announced later. "After receiving the invitation from the Indian counterpart, preparations are being made rapidly," he said. Preparations on behalf of the ministry are in the final stages. In a recent interview with
journalist Vijay Kumar Pandey, Oli said that he will visit India 'soon' and that Indian Prime Minister Modi is likely to visit Nepal in November. Ever since Oli became the Prime Minister in June 2081, efforts were being made to visit Delhi. However, the visit could not be scheduled as there was no positive response from the Indian side.
In the meantime, Oli and Modi have met in various events. Oli met Modi in New York and Bangkok. In September last year, even before Oli went to the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Nepali side tried to visit him in Delhi.
Although there was a meeting between Oli and Modi on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the subject of Oli's visit to Delhi was not fruitful. In November 2019, the relationship between the two neighbors became tense after India released a new map including the Kalapani region of Nepal in its territory.
In response to India's action, Nepal not only issued a new Chuchche map covering the territory up to Limpiyadhura, but also included it in the constitution and revised the Nissan seal accordingly. Oli was the prime minister at that time.
Since then, the relationship between Oli and Delhi has not been smooth. According to diplomatic sources, Delhi was further irritated after the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework agreement was signed during Oli's official visit to China in November last year. However, Oli continued his efforts to improve relations with India.
Last March, there was a meeting between Oli and Modi on the sidelines of the sixth summit of BIMSTEC in Bangkok. The Nepali side claimed that the meeting was more cordial than the meeting in New York. According to an official of the Prime Minister's Office, even the said meeting did not completely remove the suspicion and mistrust towards Oli in Delhi. "But we kept establishing contact with the Indian side through various means and finally the visit was confirmed," he said.
According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office, India has invited Oli for a two-day visit. According to which, Prime Minister Oli will go to Delhi on August 31, leading the Nepalese delegation. The next day, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks and sign some agreements and understandings. Coincidentally, 1 Asoj (September 17) also happens to be Modi's birthday, so government officials are optimistic that the visit will yield positive results. Before the
visit, some important bilateral mechanism meetings are taking place between Nepal and India. A home secretary level meeting is being held in New Delhi from Tuesday. Key issues including extradition treaty and mutual legal assistance will be discussed in the meeting.
