Today is the day of Ashad Shukla Purnima. Today, Guru Purnima festival is being celebrated by showing respect to Gurus who recited Gayatri, Deeksha, Veda mantras and taught. 'Gu' means darkness and 'Ru' means light.

Prof. Dr. Devmani Bhattarai, a theologian mentioned in the book of Tantra and Dharma Shastra and a member of the Nepal Panchang Adjudicatory Development Committee, says that the person who destroys the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge is called Guru. Our scriptures consider such gurus as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. That's why it is said in various books -

GururBrahma  Guruvishnu  Gurdevo  Maheshwar .

Guru : Sakshat Par Brahma Tasmai Sri Gurve Namah: ..

Like parents, gurus are considered as deities and are called 'Acharyadevo Bhava'. On the occasion of Guru Purnima, on this day, various schools and organizations have organized programs to show respect to the guru who gave education and initiation.

Similarly, today Vyasa Jayanti is also celebrated in memory of Ved Vyasa who composed 18 Puranas and 18 Upa Puranas in simple Sanskrit language to explain the meaning of the Vedas by dividing them into four parts namely Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda . As Ved Vyasa was born on the day of Ashad Shukla Purnima, Vyasa Jayanti is celebrated on this day.

Vyasa has tried to convey such a message through Puranas and Upapuranas -

'Ashtadasha Puraneshu Vyasya Vachan Dwayam .

Paropakar Punaya, Papaya Parpeedanam  ..

means that if you do good to others, you get religion, and if you hurt others, you get sin. Mahabharata, also known as the fifth Veda, was also composed by Vyasa. On this occasion, it is said that various gurukuls, schools and organizations across the country will also celebrate Guru Purnima today.
