The Union of Universities started a pressure campaign demanding that the Vice-Chancellor of the University be appointed through open competition

The Nepal Students' Union (Nevisangh) has started a pressure campaign demanding that the vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan University be appointed through open competition based on merit system.

Central President Dujang Sherpa on Sunday directed the subordinate campus unit committees to carry out phased programs to pressurize the appointment of Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University through open competition based on merit system.

'The leadership of Tribhuvan University is currently running on instrumentalism. It is our understanding that it is a shame for university officials to create regulations, guidelines, and procedures arbitrarily against the law to fulfill their personal interests and become the subject of discussion even in parliamentary committees,' Sherpa said, 'The procedure for selecting and recommending vice-chancellors made after our long struggle, 2080, is being violated and the appointment of university vice-chancellors and other officials is being made on the basis of party share. This should not happen. The Vice-Chancellor should be appointed through open competition based on merit system.'

He said that it is understood that the recruitment process is moving forward with the intention of serving the interests of political parties and groups close to power, while neglecting practical competence, transparency and dignity.

He said that in the first phase, awareness program on the campuses regarding the appointment of vice chancellor through competition, signature collection, press conference and public discussion programs are going to be held.

Similarly, he said that a circular has been issued to all subordinate campus committees to jointly prepare and submit a letter of protest against the appointments made on the basis of party divisions, to join the active unions, organizations and independent groups in the campaign and to organize a unified movement.
