Mohan Bahadur Basnet, the suspended mayor of Nagarjuna municipality, has been found guilty in a case related to money laundering. The special court convicted the suspended mayor Basnet and another defendant Rajuprasad Kandel in the money laundering case on Friday.

The bench of special court chairperson Teknarayan Kunwar and member Ram Bahadur Thapa found that Rs 9 crore 22 lakh 46 thousand 33 rupees were taken from Kandel, the owner of Padma Colony, and that the bribe was cleared by the defendant Basnet.

The Abuse of Authority Investigation Commission filed an asset laundering case in the special court on December 14, 2081, with mayor Basnet and businessman Kandel as defendants. In closing the same case, the special judge convicted both of them.  The court has been fixed on June 16th for determining the punishment.  The authority had filed a case against Basnet, along with his wife Urmila, on the charge of taking bribe money from real estate businessman Raju Prasad Kandel and purifying it. The special has given clarification to Urmila Basnet.

It is mentioned in the indictment filed by the authority that Basnet had misused his public position to purify the bribe taken from Kandel and invested it elsewhere. Basnet was elected Mayor from Congress in both local level elections in 2074 and 2079. Kandel is the director of Padma Colony Pvt Ltd and Padma Merchant Company Pvt Ltd. He has also been found guilty in a case of the same date filed against Mayor Basnet in the bribery case of Rs. 922 million 46032.

On the charge of laundering the bribe taken from the businessman Kandel, the authority had imposed a penalty of Rs.

Basnet misused the position of the city head and was accused of giving tax exemptions to Jagatguru Kripalu Foundation Nepal under various headings with the intention of taking bribes from Kandel, the president of Jagatguru Kripalu Foundation Nepal, the house/land businessman Padma Colony Pvt. Ltd./Padma Merchant Company Pvt. Pvt. and Jagatguru Kripalu Foundation Nepal, which has an area of ​​operation in Nagarjuna municipality.

Likewise, it was revealed from the investigation that 'the institution made an agreement to provide land to the defendant Rajuprasad Kandel and his companies to construct a temple within Nagarjuna municipality, to implement the same agreement, to make the agreement with the landowners and to sell the land plotting for the construction of the temple'.

It is mentioned in the indictment of the authority that Padma Colony paid only 189.4 million 18 thousand 448 rupees for the land with a market value of 47 million 75 million rupees and the remaining amount was managed by mayor Basnet and businessman Kandel in collusion.

"Therefore, it has been confirmed that Basnet misused the position of the city chief to do the above-mentioned actions, and ordered him to pay 215 million 73 thousand 395 rupees through a bank account and 682 million rupees worth of land and 24 million 72 thousand 637 rupees for the wedding banquet at Shankar Hotel." The indictment filed in particular said.

It was found that Mayor Basnet brought the bribe money into his and his wife's account and purified it, and it was also found that the land that was going to be purchased for the temple to be built by Jagatguru Kripalu Pratishthan Nepal was also distributed to local people. For that, Basnet took 3 crore 72 thousand rupees from various people in his bank account .
