Today, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is being celebrated in Nepal with various programs.

This day is celebrated every year on June 19 to demand justice for victims of sexual violence and accountability for perpetrators. This day is celebrated with the aim of ending sexual violence during conflict, ensuring justice for the victims and punishing those who commit such crimes.

This day has been reminding the state, society and the international community of their responsibility to show solidarity against sexual violence during conflict. The General Assembly of the United Nations has announced to celebrate this day from June 19, 2015. According to the United Nations, this day helps raise awareness of the need to end conflict-related sexual violence and honor victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world.

Conflict-related sexual violence refers to rape, sexual slavery, forced pregnancy, abortion, marriage and any other serious sexual violence against women or men directly or indirectly linked to war or conflict. It also covers human trafficking during times of conflict for the purpose of sexual exploitation or violence.

Conflict-related sexual violence causes physical and psychological trauma to the victim, and its effects continue to affect families and communities for generations. The National Human Rights Commission has indicated that even after all these years have passed since the peace agreement was signed in Nepal in 2063, the judicial demands of the victims of sexual violence related to the conflict have not yet been addressed.

According to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a total of 63 thousand 718 complaints related to serious violations of human rights and incidents against humanity that occurred during the armed conflict have been registered in the commission. There have been 314 complaints about rape and sexual violence.

Many cases of conflict-related sexual violence have been reported by human rights activists who are not registered due to fear, shame and insufficient services. This day supports justice for all victims and emphasizes the end of impunity. Rights activists have been pressuring the government not to delay the truth, justice and reparations that the victims should get.
