The Federation of Nepalese Journalists has said that it has drawn serious attention to the short-term interim order issued by the District Court Kathmandu regarding the news published on Nepalkhabar.com and Bizmandu.com online.
The federation has also drawn attention to the fact that the press council of Nepal is under the jurisdiction of the press council to take complaints of the victims and take action against them in case of dissatisfaction with the news published/broadcast in the media.
Judge Pitambar Sharma's single bench of the said court heard the writ petition filed by Santosh Narayan Shrestha, Chairman of Nepal Securities Board on Tuesday, and ordered the opponents to publish, not broadcast, do not publish unverified, unsubstantiated news on their website, online or other means, to remove the published news from online immediately, from the point of view of irreparable damage to the petitioner and the balance of convenience.
General Secretary of the Federation, Ram Prasad Dahal, issued a statement and said that this order from the court, ignoring the jurisdiction of the council, is contrary to the international values of freedom of the press, the provision and spirit of the Constitution of Nepal 2072. The statement said, 'The Constitution has guaranteed 'full press freedom' in its preamble. This constitutional system of press freedom cannot be limited by the order of any body.'
The federation has expressed its objection saying that this order of the court is contrary to the rules and principles of the Constitution of Nepal, the popular belief and practice of freedom of the press. "The Federation urges the relevant authorities to reconsider the said order and makes it clear that otherwise it will be forced to take court proceedings and other activities against it," the statement said.
The federation has also requested the media to fully comply with the journalistic code of conduct as the entire responsibility for the content published in the media and the responsibility to confirm the truth of the content in case of any question arises is with the relevant media.
