The State Order and Good Governance Committee has passed a bill to grant citizenship in the mother's name. Committee Chairman Ramhari Khatiwada informed that the Citizenship Bill introduced by the government has been passed by the State System and Good Governance Committee.

A bill to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act-2063 was passed in the meeting of the State Affairs Committee on Tuesday. According to the chairman of the committee, Khatiwada, there is a provision in the bill to obtain citizenship through the name of the mother or father. Previously, mother and father were mandatory to get citizenship.

When taking citizenship under mother's name, self-declaration is required. If the self-declaration made in that way is found to be false, the provision of imprisonment up to 1 year and fine has also been kept.  The government brought this bill saying that there is a large number of people without citizenship because there is no law to obtain citizenship through the name of the mother.

Similarly, Naib Subba, who is in the role of the head of the Citizenship Office, has also been provided in the bill. According to committee secretary Suraj Dura, Naib Subba, who is working as the head of the office, will also be able to be granted citizenship after this bill is passed and implemented as a law.
