The 17th National Food Hygiene Day is being celebrated today with the slogan 'Food Hygiene: The Indispensability of Science'.

In 2018, the 73rd United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate World Food Hygiene Day on June 7 every year from 2019. Mohankrishna Maharjan, spokesperson of the department, said that the department is conducting various day programs from Sunday 18th May to Saturday 24th.

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, more than 200 diseases from diarrhea to cancer are caused by unhygienic and contaminated food every year. One out of every ten people gets sick due to consumption of toxic food. Four hundred twenty thousand  People die from food borne diseases. About 550 million people get sick from diarrhea and 230,000 people die. 

Even before the celebration of Food Hygiene Day in the world, programs related to this had started to be organized in Nepal. Sanjeev Kumar Karna, director general of the department, informed the government that the department has started celebrating World Food Hygiene Day since 2065. 

According to the study of the World Health Organization, it has been pointed out that there is a problem of pesticide residues in vegetables and fruits, antibiotic residues in animal products, and toxins in food. The constitution issued by the Constituent Assembly has ensured the right to food for every Nepali.

For this, in order to make the regulation of food hygiene and quality timely and effective, according to the Constitution of Nepal, the Federal Parliament has issued the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081 to amend and unify the laws related to food hygiene and quality, and to protect human health and consumer interests, it has made a legal provision for determining the hygiene and quality of food and its effective regulation at all stages of the food chain based on scientific facts. 

Various stakeholders have an important role in complying with the provisions of the Act for Food Hygiene and Quality and to address them appropriately from their respective fields, the day is going to be celebrated in coordination with related governmental and non-governmental organizations, international development partnership organizations, food industry, food and nutrition related organizations, and consumer rights related organizations.
