Removal of Gegran in Bagmati is underway: Deputy Prime Minister Singh

Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakashman Singh has said that taking into account the possible risk of drought, the work of removing gegran in Bagmati river is going on. He said that work is currently being done at the places where there are potential risks.

On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Singh said that the ministry is making preparations by learning lessons from past incidents in a meeting called in the infrastructure development committee regarding the preparedness of the ministry to minimize damage to infrastructure including local roads, bridges and bailey bridges across the country under the Ministry of Urban Development. 

'Lessons should be learned from past events. The river should be cleaned on time. They have emphasized that the increased level of the river in the valley should be reduced. The empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has already started work on the Bagmati River, he said. Deputy Prime Minister Singh expressed his gratitude for drawing the attention of the committee before the disaster and said that necessary precautions will be taken according to the weather forecast report.

According to Narayan Prasad Bhandari, Project Director of Bagmati Civilization, the removal of Gegran has already been done in the area from Nakhkhu area, Balkumari to Manohara Dobhan. Currently, work is being done to remove gegran from the river in Balkhu area, Gokarna area below Sundarijal and Guhyeswars area.  In the

committee, the secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, Gopal Sigdel, said that necessary vigilance has been taken for disasters occurring on local roads and bridges. He informed that work is being done by appointing a 'focal person' in the subordinate offices in the provinces and districts to look after the disaster. Secretary Sigdel said that the construction work of 10 suspension bridges which were damaged by last year's flood has been completed.
