The Jatra started on the 15th of Baisakh last year when the idol of Rato Machhindranath was taken to Pulchowk. It is considered the longest journey in Nepal. After carrying the idol from the temple at Machhindrabhal, the procession started formally. Machindranath's Rathjatra, which started about 1,600 years ago, starts on Baisakh Shukla Pratipada and lasts until Asar Shukla Chaunthi.

Lalitpur Metropolitan Chief Maharjan informed that according to the tradition, the idol should be kept in Khat and taken to Bungmati on the same day as voting.
