The Nagadhunga Tunnel will be operational by next December. Preparations have been made so that the tunnel will be operational within the next six months if the working environment continues at the current pace.

Engineer Ramesh Prasad Koirala of Nippon Koika, a consulting firm, informed that 90 percent of the physical progress has been made and currently only 10 percent of the work is left.

'The equipment is now being tested and assembled into the overall tunnel work. According to the agreement, we are aiming to complete the construction and hand it over to the governing body in the first week of next October,' said Engineer Koirala.

According to him, the work of providing essential services (tunnel facility) like fire engine, emergency rescue, CCTV camera, communication and security system, continuous flow of oxygen inside the tunnel for the safety of the tunnel, easy movement and human safety is being finalized.

The 2.7 km long Surungmarg, which starts from Dahchok in Chandragiri municipality of Kathmandu on the eastern side, will end at Sisne river in Dhunibensi municipality of Dhading towards the west. Parallel to that, an auxiliary tunnel has also been dug for rescue operations. After the start of

, the physical distance from Nagadhunga to Balumbu will be shortened by about three kilometers, and it is expected to save about an hour of fuel and road users' time due to traffic jams, uphill and winding roads on the popular route.

Koirala said that the physical progress was achieved by adapting the geographical uncertainty, budget arrangement and coordination with the local people during the construction of the tunnel. He informed that although there is some confusion between the local residents, Chandragiri Municipality and Dhunibensi Municipality regarding the management of the water coming out of the tunnel, preparations are being made to address it.

The work of the park which is being built towards Sisne river has been postponed due to the dispute regarding the ownership of the land. Koirala said that it was difficult because both the name of the road department and the individual were mentioned under the name of the owner of the land in the land title document.
