Nepal Press Union has issued a 20-point 'Lomanthang International Media Summit' manifesto. The summit in Lalitpur was completed by issuing a manifesto in Lomanthang via Pokhara and Jomsom in Mustang. President of Nepal Press Union Shiv Lamsal announced the manifesto in a program organized in Lomanthang.
Acknowledging the climate crisis as a regional and global challenge, the Declaration emphasized its impact on lives, livelihoods and human rights, particularly freedom of expression and access to information. Calling for environment-friendly, inclusive and sustainable development policies, plans and infrastructure, the communication sector, political leadership and others have been asked to give priority to climate action.
Access to information and transparency are emphasized because only an informed society can counter the climate crisis. In Mustang, which is rich in cultural and natural heritage, it also highlighted the specific challenges caused by climate change and urged to take initiatives to solve the problem. On the occasion of the
conference, the serious effects of climate change on Mustang were discussed. Press Union Gandaki State President Tank Adhikari said that the attention of the federal government has also been drawn to the smooth operation of the Korala transit entry point between Nepal and China and the completion of the construction of the Kaligandaki Corridor.
Similarly, it has also called for promoting cultural and religious tourism by establishing a connection between Muktinath, Damodar Kund and Kailash Mansarovar. By addressing the interrelationship between democracy, media freedom and environmental sustainability, the summit has set a new foundation for a holistic solution to global challenges.
Chairman Lamsal said that the conference held in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) SAG has set a new approach for strengthening democracy, protecting media freedom and addressing the climate crisis. 1140 domestic and foreign journalists from India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria and other countries participated in the conference. In the conference, issues of democracy, press freedom, digital technology, AI and climate crisis were discussed as well as security challenges. The
manifesto emphasized the strict implementation of the constitutional provisions regarding the right to expression, press and information, considering democracy as an indispensable basis for development. It has also called for unity in the direction of maintaining people's trust by tearing down the threats to democracy from populism, extremism, restorationist forces and bad governance. In the
conference, former presidents of Nepal Journalist Federation Harihar Virhi, Taranath Dahal, Dharmendra Jha, Vipul Pokharel, editor of investigative journalism center Kiran Nepal, senior journalist Hari Bahadur Thapa, Bala Adhikari, vice president of International Federation of Journalists Sabina Inderjit and others were present.
