Gautama Buddha's 2569th birth anniversary is being celebrated today. A special program of Buddha Jayanti, which is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Baisakh full moon, is organized in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha.
Treasurer of Lumbini Development Fund, Dhundiraj Bhattarai said that the Buddha Purnima special ceremony held in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, will be held today at the International Buddhist Conference and Meditation Center under the chief hospitality of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. He said that the chairman of Lumbini Development Fund and the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, along with federal and state ministers, state heads of Lumbini, chief ministers, representatives of diplomatic missions and foreign guests will also participate in the special ceremony.
Buddha's birth, enlightenment, Mahaparinirvana (death) falls on the full moon day of Baisakh, so this day is celebrated as Buddha Jayanti by the Buddhists of the world including Nepal.

The Vice President Lama said that this day is of special importance because it is the day of the Buddhist full moon, the birth of Gautama Buddha, enlightenment and transformation. Birth of Gautama Buddha 2,649 years ago in 623 BC, the beautiful and holy garden of Lumbini took place on the full moon day of Baisakh Shukla.
Member Secretary of Lumbini Development Fund, Sanuraja Shakya, said that Lumbini Development Fund is trying to send a message of peace from Lumbini on the day of Buddha Jayanti when the two big powerful countries of South Asia, India and Pakistan, are heading for war.
As part of the three-day program, the hourly Mahaparitran lesson was completed on the evening of 28th Baisakh in the Mayadevi temple complex. Before the main program of Buddha Jayanti today, there will be a prayer meeting and a procession with the participation of monks, nuns, lama gurus and worshipers.

Bodhisattva Siddhartha's procession is held every year on Baisakh 30th, the day after Buddha Jayanti, and there is a program to take the newborn prince Siddhartha from Lumbini to Tilaurakot in Kapilvastu. A procession will be held from Lumbini to Kapilvastu through Mayadevi Marg to give a glimpse of the state of the Buddha.
