An American climber has died while climbing Mount Makalu. According to the district police office, 39-year-old American citizen Alexander Pankao died while climbing the mountain in Makalu Rural Municipality of Sankhuwasabha.
He died on Sunday night while reaching the third camp and returning to the second camp to stay. Pankao came to climb Makalu Himal through a trekking company called Himalayan Guides.
He, along with three other foreigners and four Nepali citizens, climbed Sankhuwasabha via Solukhumbu on April 27 to climb Makalu Himal. According to the police, the cause of his death has not been revealed.
The police said that they are trying to recover the body of the deceased. Other French climbers are unharmed. The incident site is at least 7 days walking distance from the headquarters of Khandbari.
Makalu area is considered geographically difficult due to lack of transport and communication services. The police said that they are coordinating with the trekking company to bring the body of the deceased by helicopter. After receiving information about the incident, the police went to the scene on Monday afternoon.
