In the last one year, there have been 73 incidents of violation of press freedom. According to the media monitoring unit of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, 151 journalists and five media organizations have been attacked in 73 incidents from May 4, 2024 to April 30, 2025.
According to the Federation, General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal informed that two journalists were killed during that period. Similarly, 16 incidents of occupational insecurity have been recorded.
There have been very reprehensible incidents of threats, arrests and mistreatment of journalists during this period, which the federation believes is an attack on democracy.
Today, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Federation has announced this fact. In 1991, a conference of journalists in Windhoek, Namibia, an African nation, issued a declaration in favor of press freedom.
Then, since 1993, after the United Nations approved the proposal of celebrating World Press Freedom Day on May 3 every year, this day has started to be celebrated all over the world.
Federation has expressed its regret for the killing of journalist Suresh Rajak in the violent protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu on March 15th, the arson and attack on the media, the abuse of journalist Savina Karki during the gathering of news in the teachers' protest, the physical attack on journalist Gopal Dahal by the head of the local government and the threat and mental torture of the local government.
