People will now be able to travel Pokhara-Muglin on the four-lane road, forgetting the dust and mud caused during the construction phase.
The project office said that if there are no obstacles in the construction, the road upgrading work will be completed by next winter. The Pokhara-Muglin road under the Prithvi Highway, which was built fifty years ago, was started for expansion and upgrading from May 2078.
The physical progress in the eastern section (Jamune-Muglin) of the road, which is the 'lifeline' of Gandaki province, has reached 82.95 percent and 50.34 percent in the western section (Pokhara-Jamune). According to Bishnu Prasad Pandey, engineer and information officer of the eastern section, only 3 km of black paper is left in that section of a total distance of 41.45 km. "The black paper has reached its final stage, about two kilometers of roads between Damauli and Dumre Bazar have been constructed with six lanes, while the rest have four lanes," he said. Engineer Pandey said that 17 small and big concrete bridges in the eastern section were built last year. He said that the 'signature' bridge to be built on Madi river in Tanahun is being constructed through a separate contract. Engineer Pandey said that although there was some delay in the initial stage due to the covid epidemic, the road construction work has been going on at a fast pace lately. The construction company China Communication Construction started work in the eastern section from May 2078. The contract amount of that section is six billion 21 crore 31 lakh rupees. Krishna Bahadur Kunwar, head of the western section (Pokhara-Jamune) of
project, said that the black paper work on one-way (two lanes) in that section will be completed within the first week of next May. He said that so far 35.5 km of one-way (two-lane) road has been blacked out in that section of a total distance of 38.88 km. "Only about three kilometers of one-way blacktops are left, two-way blacktops have already been completed in 18 km," said Kunwar, the head of the project.
Amarsingh, Chauthe, Vijaypur, Talchok and other areas of Kaski are yet to have one-way blackouts. The head of the project, Kunwar informed that there is a one-way black road from Pokhara International Airport to Seti Bridge.
'The delay in moving the electric poles is also affecting the road construction,' he said. He said that since the contract is due until next January, the work has been speeded up so that the black paper can be completed during that period.
He said that after the black paper is finished, the work of sidewalks, road safety etc. will start. A six-lane road will be constructed in the western section for a distance of 18.5 km and the remaining four-lane road.
'Since there is more urban area in this section, the road has been extended to six lanes,' said Kunwar, the head of the project. Of the 12 bridges in the western section, 10 have been constructed. Bridge construction work is going on at Vijaypur in Kaski and Sheratar in Tanahun.
Project chief Kunwar said that the 'signature' bridge of Seti River in Pokhara is being worked on through a separate contract. He said that the physical progress of the bridge has reached 44.66. Rasuwa Construction has taken the construction contract of the "Cable-steady" bridge. An attractive bridge is about to be built with a contract of Rs 94 crore excluding VAT.
The work on the western section connecting Tanahun's Jamunekhi to the tourist capital of Pokhara was signed on June 2, 2078 and the work started on August 12, 2078. The Chinese construction company Yanhui Kaiyuan Highway and Bridge Construction got the contract for the western section for 7 billion 40 million 46 million rupees.
Pokhara-Muglin road travel is becoming easier as most of the places in both sections have been blacked out. After the two-way black paper ends, the journey from Pokhara to Kathmandu, Narayangadh and other destinations will be much shorter. Pokhara-Muglin road with a total distance of 81 km is being expanded and upgraded with the loan support of Asian Development Bank. Tourism businessmen of Pokhara have been pressing to speed up the construction of this road project, which is a priority of the government.
It is believed that the upgrading of the main road connecting the capital of Gandaki province will help in increasing the economic and tourist activities of the region.
The compulsion of tourists and ordinary people to travel for hours splashing dust and mud while visiting Pokhara will end forever. Rajesh Gurung, the ward president of Pokhara Metropolitan City-10, said that when the structures like saliks were removed during the road expansion, the squares of Pokhara also looked open and attractive.
At Amarsinghchowk, Arghaunchowk, Buddhachowk, Talchowk etc., the squares have been widened by removing the non-standard structures. Ward President Gurung said, "There is a higher risk of accidents on wide roads, so it is important to create awareness among the general public about road safety."
