Nepal's peaceful transformation is exemplary for the world: Speaker Ghimire

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said that Nepal's journey of social justice, inclusiveness and peaceful transformation is exemplary for the world.

Addressing the 150th meeting of the Inter-Legislative Union in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Sunday, Speaker Ghimire mentioned that Nepal has set a successful journey from a unitary state system to a federal democratic republic by ending the political conflict through a fundamental agreement.

Stating that the constitution of Nepal fully ensures social justice, equality and inclusiveness, the speaker presented the fact that gender and ethnic inclusiveness is guaranteed from the highest positions of the nation to the policy making level. He said that especially the constitutional provision that the president and vice president should be selected from different genders or communities and the arrangement that the leadership of both houses of the parliament be from different genders and political parties are exemplary.

Speaking on behalf of the Parliament of Nepal under the title 'Parliamentary Work for Social Development and Justice', Speaker Ghimire presented the Parliament as the main means of social change. "Parliament can bring positive changes in society through policy making, budget allocation, law making and monitoring of implementation," he said. He said that by expanding international cooperation through the use of parliamentary diplomacy, major obstacles to social progress such as poverty, conflict and climate change can be faced. 

The Speaker presented the practice of promoting parliamentary openness as an important achievement of Nepal, as well as ensuring strong representation of women, youth, tribals, tribes and backward classes through Parliament. Discussing the 16th five-year plan of Nepal, he said that the government has given special priority to ensure equal access of citizens to health, education, employment and housing. 

Stating that climate change is the most serious challenge for Nepal, the speaker said that the lives of millions of citizens are being affected by natural disasters every year. He recalled the role played by Nepal in promoting green energy, climate adaptation policies and expanding international cooperation to ensure climate justice. Informing that ``Sagarmatha Dialogue'' will be held in Nepal on May 16-18, he informed that preparations are being made to advance the international debate on the effects of climate change on the mountainous region.
