Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the national aspiration of 'Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali', taken by Nepal with the main content of the 'BIMSTEC' summit and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, resonates deeply. He said that climate change is creating a crisis in the existence of all mankind.
Addressing the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit, which started at Hotel Sadgrila in Bangkok, Thailand, Prime Minister Oli said that the three pillars of the BIMSTEC conference, such as prosperity, flexibility and openness, resonate deeply with the goals of sustainable development and the national aspirations of Nepal.
He emphasized that BIMSTEC should seize not only the changing times but also the opportunity to revitalize our regional cooperation. He said, 'I believe the theme of the summit provides us with that measure, which is in favor of the people, prosperity and well-being.'
Prime Minister Oli said that an integrated effort is necessary to uncover our potential and capitalize on the resources we have. He acknowledged that the economies of the region are not equal and asked for priority assistance to enable member states with special needs.
Mentioning that climate change has created a crisis in the existence of all mankind, he said that the Himalayas here are a source of water for Asia. "The mountains here are contributing to global warming, but despite our low carbon emissions, they are facing a disproportionate attack. Its impact is not only in the mountains but also in the low plains and coastal areas,' he said.
In order to highlight the plight of the mountains and the relationship between the mountains and the ocean, Nepal is going to organize the first edition of 'Sagarmatha Samvad' in the coming May, he said.
He called for joint and integrated efforts as BIMSTEC exemplifies unique cooperation between two dynamic regions (South Asia and Southeast Asia). The 'BIMSTEC Maritime Transport Cooperation' was signed at the summit. Prime Ministers (leaders of delegations) of Thailand, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka have addressed the summit.
