In Dhorpatan, Nepal's only hunting reserve, the challenge of protecting the endangered red panda is increasing. The challenge of conservation has increased after the red panda's habitat has been destroyed.
The red panda lives in the Nigalo bush and survives by eating its pieces. But recently, the risk of red pandas becoming a crisis has increased due to deforestation and fires.
According to Sagar Subedi, Ranger of Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Dhorpatan has the largest number of red pandas in the country. He said that there are about 300 red pandas in the hunting reserve even though there is no single count yet. Subedi said that the number of red pandas was very low in the survey conducted by the Sikar Reserve in 2074, and now it is estimated to be around 200 to 300.
He said that he has requested the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department for the red panda count. He informed that red pandas were found in Fagune, Surtibang, Sundah, Barse, Bhustung, Dogadi and Seng blocks of Dhorpatan hunting reserve. Subedi says that red pandas are now seen more than before.
'Until 2072, red pandas were scattered in Dhorpatan, during a survey in 2074, red pandas were found in all blocks, now they are found in many places', he said.
Saroj Panthi, head of the division forest office, said that red pandas can also be found in the upper forest area of Baglung apart from the hunting reserve area. He says that due to the growing fires, deforestation and population density, the challenge in its protection has increased. Panthi said that the local government should be aware of the need to protect the red panda and make the locals aware.
Red pandas are found especially in the highlands and Himalayan regions east of Karnali . Currently, red pandas are found only in 23 Himalayan and hilly districts of the country. He says that it is necessary to preserve even the scraps of the red panda's food. Panthi says that since this is a shy nature, it should not be disturbed even in general.
