Last February, 76-year-old Bhimprasad Bhattarai of Haldibari Rural Municipality-4 here died after being attacked by an elephant.
Bhattarai was found dead in Chowki Biram Community Forest, four kilometers south of his home. Last December, Kachankawal- 7 of the Kailavati dynasty lost their lives in an attack by an elephant. This year alone, four people died in the attack of elephants in the district .
Veterinarian Sonam Bhal of Division Forest Office Jhapa informed that 64 people died in the attack of elephants in the district in the past 14 years. In the same period, the number of foreign nationals who died due to elephant attacks is eight. B.S. 22 wild elephants have died in Jhapa since 2062. Bhal said .
According to Veterinarian Bhal, it is practically difficult to relocate the settlement to protect the elephant's traditional movement area. He said that human-elephant conflict can be reduced only if public awareness can be spread in the community as a measure at that time.
According to the statistics of Division Forest Office, relief has been distributed to five hundred and ten people who suffered from wild elephants in the current financial year. Out of which 2 lakh 61 thousand 120 rupees were given to two injured, 23 lakh rupees to 148 households whose houses were damaged, 127 families whose stored grain was damaged, 9 lakh 79 thousand 45 rupees and 371 families whose crops were damaged, Rs. 34 lakh 53 thousand four hundred relief has been distributed . According to the
office, in the current year, the Ministry has distributed relief of Rs. According to Dr. Bhal, the family of the deceased, the Division One has been providing Rs 10 lakh per person, up to Rs 2 lakh for the injured, up to Rs 5 lakh in case of life-long disability, up to Rs 10,000 in case of damage to food crops and storage and up to Rs 20,000 in case of house and shed collapse.
Human losses due to elephant attacks are increasing in the district . Although a long-term solution could not be found, Division Forest Jhapa has said that it is paying attention to increasing public awareness, proper relief management and effective forest management.
