As the number of tigers increases in Nepal, it is seen that their habitat area needs to be increased. Even though park areas, intermediate areas and other forest areas are habitats for tigers, the problem of habitats has also increased as the number of tigers has increased.
In an interactive program organized by Chitwan National Park here, Haribhadra Acharya, senior ecologist of the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department, said that it is necessary to increase the habitat for tigers. He said that since the number of tigers has been increasing for the past five years, it is necessary to increase the habitat.
He said, 'Violent tigers need to be protected by making an open zoo, by making an open zoo it can be linked to income generation.'
The number of tigers in Nepal increased from 121 in 2009 to 355 in 2022. The number of tigers was 198 in 2013 and 253 in 2018. Acharya said that the habitat area has decreased by 93 percent due to the increase in the number of tigers. He informed that 100 years ago, there were around 100,000 tigers in the world, but now this number has decreased to 5,000. In recent years, attention has been paid to the protection of tigers, so its number is increasing.
Acharya said that around 500 tigers can be kept in the forest area of Nepal. He said, 'It seems that four hundred and four tigers can be kept in the core area of the park.' As the main diet of tigers is deer species, it is necessary to protect it as well. Information was given on the occasion that along with deer species, monkeys and domestic animals are tiger's food.
