The tenure of Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Basant Bahadur Kunwar is ending today. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has also called a cabinet meeting on Monday evening to appoint a new IGP. It is said that the 31st IGP of Nepal Police will be appointed at the same meeting.

3 AIGs are competing for the new IGP. Currently, Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) chief Deepak Thapa, National Police Training Institute chief Sudip Giri and Kathmandu Valley Police Office Ranipokhari chief Tek Bahadur Tamang are in the running for IGP. The tenure of the new Chief of Police will last for about 6 months till 18 August 082. Based on seniority, efficiency and performance, Thapa  Looks ahead of Giri and Tamang. 

The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Chait 10, 2079 made Kunwar the 30th Inspector General of Nepal Police. He is about to go on mandatory retirement after 30 years of service. He entered the police service on 5th Chait 2051. His batchmates AIG Tech Prasad Rai, Buddhiraj Gurung, Durga Singh, Kuveer Kadayat and Janak Bhattarai will also retire. Bhattarai became the AIG on February 13. Similarly, DIG Dhruv Raut, Bhola Rawal and Ganesh Chand are also retiring  .

According to Police Regulations-2071, it has been mentioned that during the promotion to the post of Inspector General of Police, a person who can provide seniority, efficiency, efficiency, ability to shoulder responsibility and leadership should be promoted from among the AIGs. There is a provision for the Ministry of Home Affairs to submit a proposal to the Council of Ministers for the appointment of IGP.
