Deepak Thapa has been appointed as the 31st Inspector General (IGP) of Nepal Police. A minister informed that Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Thapa has been appointed as Inspector General of Police in the cabinet meeting held on Monday evening. AIG Thapa was earlier the chief of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the police.
A new inspector general has been appointed after Vasant Kunwar retired on Monday. Kunwar became the 30th Inspector General of Nepal Police on 10th Chait 2079. He has gone on compulsory retirement after 30 years of service. He joined the police service on 5th Chait 2051 .
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already bid farewell to Kunwar on Monday evening. His batchmates AIG Tech Prasad Rai, Buddhiraj Gurung, Durga Singh, Kuveer Kadayat and Janak Bhattarai will also retire. Bhattarai became AIG only on February 13. Similarly, DIG Dhruv Raut, Bhola Rawal and Ganesh Chand have also retired.
The newly appointed Inspector General of Police Thapa entered the police service as an inspector on 19 August 2052. Similarly, he became DSP on August 8, 2063. He became SP on July 8, 2072 and was promoted to SSP on February 6, 2075. Similarly, he became DIG on June 17, 2079 and became AIG on Chait 6, 2079.
3 AIGs were in competition for the new IGP. Thapa, National Police Training Institute chief Sudip Giri and Kathmandu Valley Police Office Ranipokhari chief Tek Bahadur Tamang were in the running for IGP. The tenure of the new Inspector General of Police will be only for 6 months till August 18, 2082. On the basis of seniority, efficiency and performance, Thapa was ahead of Giri and Tamang.
