With the intention of prolonging the term in some campuses, the officials of SWUU are leading to disrupt the election process
Due to factional disputes, the ruling Congress-affiliated New Union Congress was unable to decide on an official candidate, leaving more than a dozen individual campuses of Tribhuvan University in limbo. The election process has been disrupted due to the lockdown of some campuses by organizations including Aneraswaviyu and Akhil Krantikari.
In some campuses, it has been alleged that the officials of SWUU are disrupting the election process in order to extend their tenure.
Due to the internal dispute of the union, it has not been decided whether the election will be held at Tribhuvan University campus Kirtipur on 5th Chait. The Union Center has recommended Deepak Raj Joshi as the official candidate for the president of SWU, while the Unit of the Union University has put forward Anoj Karki as the official candidate. After registration of candidature, the unit committee has locked. Trivika rector, registrar and other officials discussed with Congress General Minister Bishwa Prakash Sharma, Home Minister Ramesh Utkar and other leaders but no solution came out.
17 people have registered their candidacy for the chairmanship in Kirtipur. However, due to the lockdown in the election committee, protesting claims and publication of the final list of candidates is blocked. One side threatens not to proceed with the election process. The other one has put pressure to move forward,' said a member of the election committee, 'They all fell into Chepuwa.' The police arrested six people including him on the charge of vandalizing the campus. In Mahendra Morang, Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Shekhar Koirala had filed their candidacy separately. The other party is dissatisfied after the election committee considered the establishment party as official. Clashes and vandalism are happening between the two groups of the Navy.
At least 18 out of the 62 members of the university have not decided to hold the election on the specified date, according to the university. In most of the 18 seats, Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Shekhar Koirala have registered their candidacies and there is a dispute over which one is official.
A member of the election committee said that students including the president of Swaviyu are doing activities to stop the election in Padmakanya campus in Kathmandu. "We are trying to advance the election activities with the help of the police," he said. In Nepal Law, Saraswati, Bishwabhasha and Public Youth Campus, the process has been stopped due to a dispute between the student organizations regarding voter registration. Students have locked down in Sankardev, Thapathali, Sanothimi campuses.
Siddhanath Science Campus Kanchanpur Election Officer has resigned. According to the campus, the election committee was dissolved due to tension between the student organizations. There is a lockout of NAVISANGH in Bhairawa Multipurpose and Butwal Multipurpose Campuses while the election process is disrupted due to the lockout of ANERASWVIU in Paklihwa Campus Rupandehi. Elections in Ramswaroop Ramsagar Campus Janakpur, Degree Campus Biratnagar and Surkhet Campus have also been stopped due to lockdown. Baglung's Dhaulagiri Multipurpose Campus has also been disrupted.
The student leader of the Union Central Committee alleges that the current president of the Union University has pulled many tricks to extend his tenure. If there is no election, there is a provision to extend the tenure of the Swaviyu. When the Executive Council of the University decided that the tenure of the Swaviyu elected in 2079 would end on 4 Chait 2081, the current office bearers protested. "Swaviyu presidents want to extend their tenure. Even if they want to leave, they say they need the candidate they want," said one of the central members of the Navy Union. "Party factions have also affected the Navy Union." The conflict within the party is also seen in the campus. How can we reconcile the issues within the party?' He said, 'Student leaders are threatening that if the election is held, we will retaliate, we will break our hands and feet.' "We are going to the Swabiyu elections by combining all the parties. Disagreements will soon be removed,” he said. Coordinator and Rector of the Central Election Committee Khadg KC said that the political leadership and the campus level are coordinating to hold elections in all the campuses.
Election committee members include registrar Kedar Rizal, dean, campus head and others. Previously, in 2079, the Swaviyu elections were held on the same date only in 40 campuses out of the 62 branches of the University. Swaviyu elections are held in more than 300 campuses, private, community and university. Out of them, 84 campuses have gone uncontested.
Samik Badal, the president of the UNSWA, says that the internal factionalism of the union had an impact on the elections. Elections have been affected in most places because of the union. Winning or losing is not a big deal. The activity of blocking the election by locking it has discredited the student politics," he said.
He alleged that even though the Congress was under the leadership of the home administration, they could not provide security to the campus and the election committee. "The election committee has raised the issue of lack of security," President Badal said, "The Congress and the Union should be serious about sending the tickets of the Swaviyu candidate in one hand and the lock in the other." The question of financial transparency is also being raised on Swaviyu. There is a tendency to raise student agendas in SWU elections, rather than having academic debates, there is a tendency to make candidates by forming party/non-party panels, to show strength, and to try to misuse power and authority. It was found that some of the officers of the Swabiyu elected in 2079 were involved in activities such as beatings, vandalism, lockouts, and extortion.
Former professor and civic leader Sanjiv Upreti commented that partisanship is increasing in the university and it is becoming a breeding ground for political party activists. "There should be intense debates and discussions on political, social justice and democracy issues in the university," he said, "but it is better if there is no partisanship in the name of teachers and students." Even if Swaviyu is connected with the party, it should be made an independent entity.'
