From the nursery of Swaviyu to the leadership of state power

Although the main basis of the political practice and learning of the country's highest position, executive head and party leader is 'student politics', recently the process of democratic practice of it, the Swaviyu election, is getting overshadowed. The political leadership development of students has come to a standstill due to the trend of not holding elections or not allowing them to take place, delaying and obstructing them.

President Ramchandra Paudel or former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Constituent Assembly President and former Speaker Subaschandra Nemwang, former Speaker Damannath Dhungana, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Congress General Minister Gagan Thapa and Vishwaprakash Sharma, LOSPA President Mahant Thakur and Maoist Vice President Krishna Bahadur Mahara have come from student politics. Health Minister Pradeep Paudel and Culture and Tourism Minister Badri Pandey, other Congress leaders Vimalendra Nidhi, NP Saud, Deepak Giri, Balkrishna Khan, Anand Dhungana, Govinda Bahadur Shah, Surendra Pandey, Surendra Chaudhary, Yuvraj Khati, Kishoresingh Rathore and Mahendra Yadav are also 'products' of Swaviyu politics.

UML leaders Koshi Chief Minister Hikmat Karki, Gandaki Chief Minister Surendraraj Pandey, former minister Yogesh Bhattarai, Khagraj Adhikari, Padam Giri and Thakur Gayre have also arrived here leading the independent student union. Rajendra Rai, former Chief Minister of Koshi, the leader of the United Socialist Party, was also the president of Swaviyu.

6 decades ago in Kathmandu, students of 22 schools protested demanding independence, and Ramchandra Poudel was in the forefront of it. Later, while studying at Saraswati Multipurpose Campus, Thamel, he became the President of Swaviyu in 2023. He is now the president.

Former president Bhandari Mahendra Morang is the former SWIU treasurer of the campus. Former Prime Minister and Congress President Deuba was a candidate for the post of President in the Swaviyu elections held at Central Campus Kirtipur in 2027/28. At that time, he lost the election, but on the basis of that, he rose to politics and became the prime minister five times. The late leader of UML, Subash Chandra Nemwang, who was two-time chairman of the Constituent Assembly and several times the speaker, was the president of Swaviyu at the Mahendra Ratna Multipurpose Campus in 2029. Former Speaker Dhungana became the president of Swaviyu Central Campus in Kirtipur in 2019.

In universities and campuses, the self-reliance of common bodies that raise their voice for the protection of students' rights is recognized. There are dozens of leaders who emerged from the politics of Swaviyu and entered mainstream parties and reached important positions in the state. UML General Secretary Pokharel, Congress General Minister Thapa, LOSPA President Thakur have advanced party politics through Swaviyu. Pokharel Central Campus and Thakur Rarab Campus Janakpur is the former President of SWAVIU. Maoist Vice President Mahara's political background is also linked to Swaviyu. He was a one-time speaker and several times a minister, and he became the treasurer of Swaviyu University in PN Campus Pokhara.

Congress General Minister Thapa was elected as the President of Trichandra Campus of Kathmandu in 2055. Another General Minister Sharma is also a competitor in the Swaviyu elections. Sharma was a member of Swaviyu in the year 2043 and a candidate for the post of joint secretary in 2045 at Mechi Multiplex Campus. But both times he lost the election. The political journey continued. Sharma became the Central President of the Navy in 2057. He says that Swaviyu is the only and common platform of student politics. "Leadership will be developed by learning from student politics," he said.

Minister of Health Paudel and Minister of Culture and Tourism Pandey are also the former presidents of the Union. Paudel was elected as the president of the ASU in 2053 at Amrit Science Campus (ASCAL) and Pandey at the Valmiki Campus in 2055. Paudel, who became the chairman of SWIU at the age of 22, is remembered as having great importance in the SWIU election held in Askal, which was considered the center of science studies in the country at that time. "The student movement seemed to be the power of the national level," he said. But thematic debates and educational demands were the subject of discussion. At that time, Poudel remembered that students, parents and college administration all had trust in Swaviyu.

Congress leaders Nidhi, Saud, Giri, Khan, Dhungana, Shah, Pandey, Surendra, Khati, Rathore and Yadav also came from the politics of Swaviyu. In 2037, former Foreign Minister Saud, who was the secretary of SWIU at Siddhanath Science Campus, Mahendranagar, said that when political parties were banned, SWIU was the center of electoral politics.

UML leader Koshi Chief Minister Karki, former Gandaki Chief Minister Adhikari, Gayre and other leaders have established themselves in mainstream politics from Swaviyu.  Former minister late Rabindra Adhikari also rose to politics from Swaviyu. Former Chief Minister of Koshi and leader of United Socialist Party, Rai became the President of Ratna Rajya Campus in 2049. UML secretary and former minister Bhattarai Mahendra Ratna is the former president of Tahachal Campus.

PN Campus Pokhara's former president of UML, MP and former minister Padam Giri says that in the past, the election of SWIU was focused on political change. It seems that the meaning of the achievement of Swaviyu obtained through great sacrifice is not understood now. In Swaviyu, if they win, it will be fine, if they don't win, they will destroy it," he said. "Now, the debate should be focused on the development of the education sector. The academic environment in the campus should be disciplined, dignified, ideological.'

Urmila Aryal Thakurram, former vice-president of the National Assembly, is the former president of the Multicultural Campus Birganj. Maoist leader and ex-minister Bina Magar, Himal Sharma also came forward from Swabiyu politics. Magar Saraswati is the immediate past president of the campus. Gyanendra Yadav, the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Madhesh Pradesh, and former MP Pramod Shah, who made their mark in politics through Madhesh-centric issues, are both former presidents of Ramswaroop Ramsagar Multipurpose Campus Janakpur.

Janakpur's former mayor Vrishesh Chandra Lal and Lalkishor Sah, former ministers of the state Shailendra Sah, Mahesh Yadav, Yogendra Rai Yadav and other leaders have come to party politics through Swaviyu. Tamalopa President Lal was a contender for the Presidentship of Swaviyu at Rarab Campus in 2030. According to Lal, LOSPA president Thakur was elected as the president of Swaviyu in 2025 from the same college. It is remembered that Congress leader Nidhi became the Secretary of Self-Employed Union around 2029/30.

In the last generation, leaders including Manushi Yami Bhattarai and Pratima Gautam have also entered party politics from self-reliance politics. Bhattarai is now the vice president of Nepal Samajwadi Party Naya Shakti. Gautam is a member of the House of Representatives from the Congress. People with a background in self-reliance politics have established themselves in other areas of society as well. Some are professors, some have become ambassadors.

According to Jhalak Subedi, the former president of PN Campus Pokhara and analyst Jhalak Subedi, Swaviyu was the means to face difficulties during the autocratic monarchy. "The left wing made the Swaviyu election a means to make a new democratic revolution and the liberals used it as a means to go to the parliamentary system," he said. But recently, the Mandal character has started to appear in the name of Swaviyu elections. Those who have power, there is an attack on the weak.''

Congress General Minister Sharma says that the future student movement should focus on educational, social and climate change issues. Former Swaviyu President and Health Minister Paudel said that the recent increase in negative comments about Swaviyu is a matter of concern. "Swaviyu should be established as a pressure group to create an educational environment within the college and speak against abuse," he said.
