Rhino count, which is done every five years, will not be done this year due to lack of funds.
Ramchandra Kandel, director general of the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department, said that it was stopped this year because the aid was being counted with the help of donors. The government has not provided a budget to keep a regular record of rhinoceros.
This year, even if it cannot be counted, the situation will be identified based on the signs of one rhinoceros through the post of the park, he said. He said that it will be counted as possible by mobilizing the entire human resources of the park.
Director General Kandel said, 'Even though the exact number is not public like a calculation, the situation is detected based on the marks of each rhinoceros.' The department had been counting the rhinos in collaboration with various donor agencies collaborating with the park.
A one-horned rhinoceros is found in Chitwan, Parsa, Bardia and Shuklaphanta national parks. The calculation showed that most of them are in Chitwan. According to the calculation, there were 752 rhinos at that time. There were 694 one-horned rhinos in Chitwan National Park . There are 38 such rhinos in Bardia, 18 in Shuklaphanta and three in Parsa.
There were 800 rhinos in Nepal in 1950, 400 in 1955, 300 in 1960, 100 in 1965, 108 in 1970, 147 in 1975, 310 in 1980, 310 in 1985, 358 in 1990, and 466 in 1995. Similarly, there were 612 rhinos in 2000, 409 in 2005, 435 in 2010 and 645 in 2015. Rhinos were previously counted in 2021 .
