Speaker Devraj Ghimire has made it clear that the House of Representatives will not enact any type of law that would curtail press freedom.

Addressing the second anniversary and general meeting of the Economic Media Association Nepal (IMAN), the umbrella organization of the economic media, Speaker Ghimire has clearly stated that the Constitution should not go against the freedom of press and expression.

'I am aware of your concern regarding the pending bill in Parliament. He said that there will be no restrictions on the freedom of the press under any circumstances. He also emphasized that no law should attempt to obstruct the free practice of journalism, prevent access to information or weaken transparency.

Noting that the country is now passing through the stage of transitional economy and moving forward in the direction of building industry, infrastructure development, financial stability and an investment-friendly environment, he also held the view that strong cooperation between the government, private sector, financial institutions and the communication sector is necessary while revising the past economic policies and looking for new possibilities.  He expressed concern by mentioning that the trend of providing necessary data for

fact-based news has not been developed, and that due to advertising and financial benefits, news gathering is affected in some cases. He was of the opinion that economic journalism should not only be a means of news transmission, but also an important tool to guide policy-making and sustainable development.
