Passengers stranded on Madhyapahari Lokmarg due to snowfall in Rukum East have been rescued. Passengers in three buses and other small vehicles were rescued from the Lukum-Patihalna area of Madhyapahari highway blocked due to snowfall since Friday night.
Since the road was closed due to snowfall, passengers were stranded since Friday afternoon as the bus could not cross the Rukum East and Baglung border . Rukum Paschim's girlfriend Malla said that the bus left for Kathmandu from Rukum Paschim reached Patihalna on Friday afternoon but could not proceed due to snow.
Travelers have said that they spent 48 hours without food as there was no hotel nearby and they could not stay in two small hotels in Patihalna. Rudraprasad Neupane, the chief district officer of Rukum East, informed that the passengers were rescued by clearing the snow on the Madhyapahari highway throughout the day on Saturday.
Passengers were rescued by removing the snow in about five kilometers of Lukum-Patihalna section and two kilometers of Baglung section of Rukum East, he said.
The snow was removed with the help of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. After the snow cleared, the buses that left from Rukum for Kathmandu and the buses that left for Kathmandu from Rukum have been diverted. In addition, police inspector Him Bahadur KC of Rukum East informed that dozens of small vehicles were also run over.
After rescuing the passengers trapped in the snow, buses have been asked not to drive through the road at night. Chief District Officer Neupane said that only after looking at the condition of this section of Madhyapahari Lokmarg on Sunday morning, he will be informed whether to operate the means of transport or not. Due to annual snowfall in Rukum East and Baglung border, the public road is blocked.
