Gyalpo Lhosar, a cultural festival celebrated by the Sherpa community every year on the day of Fagun Shukla Pratipada, is being celebrated today by organizing various programs. The Sherpa community is going to celebrate the 2152nd Gyalpo Lhosar as a new year.

Gyalpo Lhosar has been divided into 12 classes, namely Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon (Cloud), Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Barah. Gyalpo Lhosar is celebrated grandly by organizing various programs from February New Moon to Full Moon.

Gyalpo has been started to be celebrated under the name of Spring Festival since the time of Ude Gungyal, the ninth king of Lhosar Bhot. Researcher Tika Sherpa said that Galpo Lhosar was renamed over time. He also informed that this Lhosar is pronounced by some as Galpo and by others as Galbo.

In the past, Gyalpo Lhosar is celebrated in 12 districts of the Himalayan region and is currently celebrated in 22 districts. With the migration of the Sherpa tribe, the district celebrating this festival has increased. On the 15th of December, Gurung community celebrated Tamu and Magh Shukla Pratipada, Tamang community also celebrated this festival in the name of Sonam Lhosar.
