There was a scholar of Nepali and English grammar - Chudamani Gautam, who used to say, "I am always in favor of pure and correct spelling." He spent the golden days of his life in the study of spelling. The same Gautam died on Monday at the age of 82.
Gautam, who is known as 'Grammar Guru', has been credited with making important contributions to take Nepali language and grammar to new heights.
According to the hospital, he had serious liver problems due to diabetes. He died during treatment. Born in Khamlalung, Tehrathum on October 1, 2000, Gautam's family later migrated to Charali, Jhapa. Eldest son Nidhiraman Gautam is still living there.
Gautam has made an incomparable contribution to language education by writing Nepali and English grammar books. His 'Higher Level English Grammar', 'Composition and Pronunciation' English grammar book was published in 2037. This book, which has been reprinted about 500 times, is said to have sold more than 3 million copies. Even now this book is most sought after by those who want to learn English language.
Gautam, who started his grammar writing journey with 'Gautam Grammar', his relatives say that he has earned around 20 crore rupees from the same field. Although he achieved financial success by writing English grammar, he became active in the promotion of Nepali language after the 60s.
Gautam was not satisfied with the teaching style of the Gurus of Nepal. "School/university teachers are not users of the language in the true sense, they cannot go beyond the subject-circle written in the book like a nose," Gautam told Kantipur a few years ago, "You can't even call yourself a linguist just because you are a teacher or a professor." Books such as Comprehensive Nepali Dictionary, How to Write Pure Nepali, Good English Conversation Practice etc. are popular. He has published dozens of books for the improvement of correct writing, grammar and pronunciation of Nepali language.
Writer Punya Prasad Kharel said that Gautam's death has caused irreparable damage to the Nepali language and education sector.
