Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba has said that China has not pressured Nepal to take a loan. While going to Geneva, Switzerland to participate in the 58th high-level session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, while giving an interview to the Indian newspaper 'The Hindu' in Muscat, Oman, Foreign Minister Rana said that although the private sector can take loans, Nepal is not in favor of taking loans.
Foreign Minister Rana said in a conversation with Suhasini Haider, the diplomatic affairs editor of 'The Hindu' , 'China has not really asked Nepal to take a loan from us. Similarly, Nepal's government debt ratio is high. If the private sector wants, they can take loans.' Compared to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Nepal, public debt liability has exceeded 45 percent. According to the report published by the Public Debt Management Office, the government debt has reached 26 trillion 11 billion 60 million by January of the current financial year 2081/82.
Likewise, Foreign Minister Rana has also said that India is not angry about Nepal's agreement on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project. He says that India has not given any official response. During the interview, Rana said, 'Contrary to the non-aligned foreign policy, Nepal has not entered into an agreement to harm any country.'
'Prime Minister's visit to India soon'
Foreign Minister Rana has also said that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's visit to India will be soon. 'Has a certain date been fixed for Prime Minister Oli's visit to India?' When asked by 'The Hindu', Foreign Minister Rana said, 'Whenever an invitation comes.'
Foreign Minister Rana says that due to the fact that elections are being held in various states in India, the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being delayed. I have heard that there is a delay because the Indian Prime Minister is busy with elections. Prime Minister Oli will visit India by the middle of this year,' she said.
Prime Minister Oli and his Indian counterpart Modi are expected to meet at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand on April 2-4.
'Impact of stopping US aid'
Foreign Minister Rana says that Nepal has also been affected when US President Donald Trump stopped foreign aid. The US also stopped aid under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Nepal was formed for the implementation of MCC project.
The program of MCA Nepal has been stopped after Trump's order. In the initial agreement, it was mentioned that the American government would pay 500 million dollars and the Nepalese government would pay 197 million dollars for the 697 million dollars project. The US announced an additional 50 million dollars for the project last December.
Foreign Minister Rana has responded to this and said, 'This was a very important project for us. Because we were building a transmission line through it, which would also make it easy to sell electricity to India. It is also about making the country economically independent. Let's see what happens.'
