Press Union's demand to withdraw the 'Social Media Bill'

Nepal Press Union has demanded the government to withdraw the 'Social Media Bill, 2081'. Union Central Committee issued a 12-point manifesto at the National Conference of Provincial Presidents and District Presidents held in Kathmandu.

It is mentioned in the manifesto issued by the union after the conclusion of the conference that the union has serious disagreements on some of the provisions in the 'Social Network Bill'.  Central Vice President of the Union Nakul Aryal informed that it has been decided to withdraw the provisions in the

bill that affect the freedom of press and expression by discussing and consulting with those concerned to ensure the freedom of press and expression. In the

conference, there was a discussion on the organizational activities of Nepal Press Union, issues of working journalists and journalism, professional safety of journalists, press and freedom of expression, challenges added to the communication sector by the development of technology, laws and laws related to communication, and problems of the media. The

conference passed the organizational report presented by General Secretary Dilip Paudel and the Disciplinary Committee report presented by Senior Vice President and Disciplinary Department Coordinator Prem KC . The union has also announced that it will fully implement the action plan prepared by the central committee based on the suggestions given by the conference.  

It has also been announced that by organizing the membership further, it will conduct a membership cleansing campaign by including active journalists as per the provision in the union's constitution, and that the provinces and branches will hold the general meeting by the end of May.

It has also been announced that all the structures of the union will carry out a pressure campaign as required by drawing the attention of the government and the media establishment on issues such as the Working Journalist Act, the implementation of the minimum wage, payment of regular wages, professional, physical, financial, and social security of journalists.

Indicating that the laws and guidelines created by different levels of government are curtailed to suppress the right of press and freedom of expression, the union has strongly demanded that all three levels of government make policies, rules, laws, regulations related to communication in order to ensure the constitutional rights.

Professional journalism, professional safety of journalists, capacity development of journalists and other issues announced by the Central Committee to make the 'Press Union with Journalists' campaign effective, the conference has expressed the commitment that all branches and provincial committees will implement programs including capacity development, departmental training of journalism, programs to support journalists in hardships, insurance, social security, encouragement and writing skills .

It is said that the legislative amendment process will be started to make the Press Union Act 2048 (Sixth Amendment-2079) timely and practical.

"Lomanthang International Media Summit" will be organized in March.

In order to internationalize Nepal's journalism issues and create an environment to follow international practices in Nepal, the Union is going to organize the 'Lomanthang International Media Summit' in the last week of March. The conference has expressed its commitment to complete the summit in a grand manner .

The union has requested the federation to immediately start the process of retaining the membership of the journalists who have been dismissed from the membership of the Nepal Journalists Association. Bajrayogini, the austerity place of sage Nemuni, with the history of the naming of Nepal, Bajrayogini, the penance place of sage Nemuni, Shalinadi, Madhavnarayan and Sankhu area mentioned in the Vratkatha, religious and cultural tourist areas including Manichud, Panchamahalakshmi, Narayanishwar, Kundeshwar and the agricultural tourism sector in this area where potatoes and rice are the main crops, have been drawn to the attention of the government through mass media and also for infrastructure development in this area .

The Central Committee expressed gratitude and thanks to all those who directly and indirectly supported Press Union Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Sankhu branches to complete the national conference of state and branch presidents of Press Union.
