Baburam Bhattarai has been elected as the President of NESP (New Power). In the election held under the first convention, Bhattarai was elected as the president after defeating another candidate for the president, Netra Chapagai. In the election contest, Bhattarai got 761 votes and Chapagai got 73 votes.
Sonamsingh Syangtan has won the post of General Secretary. Bhattarai's daughter Manushi Yami Bhattarai, Durga Sob, Ishwari Rizal, Tek Bahadur Bathamagar, Umesh Shah have been selected as vice presidents. There is a provision in the new power statute to nominate only 9 out of 99 members of the Central Committee.
Hariprasad Rizal has been unopposed as treasurer. Voting was held for 79 positions including officers in the 99-member Central Committee. The newly elected working committee took the oath of office and secrecy on Thursday itself. Some leaders protested for a while during the swearing-in ceremony expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership selection.
