The Human Rights and Peace Society has started a civil dialogue saying that the social media operation bill submitted by the government to the National Assembly is against freedom of press and expression. The society held a civic dialogue program in Tehrathum and Rupandehi on Tuesday.

Lakshminarayan Mishra, vice president of the society, said that the society started a dialogue program at the citizen level as there was a need for all citizens to know about the provisions of the bill and to demand the removal of its retrogressive provisions. The participants in the program held in Manlung, Tehrathum demanded that the bill put forward by the government be corrected as it violates fundamental rights.  At the

program, Tehrathum Bar President Advocate Dik Bahadur Karki, civil society leader Kapildev Singhak and others said that although there is a need to bring the distortions seen in social media under the scope of regulation, they are not in a position to accept the current proposed law.  In the

program, Deputy Chairman Advocate Mishra presented a working paper on the provisions of the Bill. This bill is against freedom of press and expression. It is seen that this will reduce the rights of the citizens obtained from many fundamental rights. Immediately after the government submitted the bill to the National Assembly, the society felt that the bill was not friendly to the freedom of expression of the citizens and the press. Shankar Joshi, president of Shanti Samaj Terathum, said that if the necessary reforms are not made in the bill, the society will proceed with more struggle programs.

On Tuesday, the district branch of Shanti Samaj also held a civil dialogue in Rupandehi. Participating civil society leaders were of the opinion that they should protest if this bill is not withdrawn. Writer Rishi Azad, former chairman of Shanti Samaj Govind Khanal, Congress leader Yuvraj Giri and others said that the provisions of the bill raised questions about the certainty of fundamental rights of citizens. He said that the government should amend it, otherwise they will start a struggle.
