Parliamentarians have alleged that the government has amended the Black Market Act to encourage the increase in prices. Speaking at the Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee meeting under the National Assembly on Tuesday, most of the MPs expressed this opinion.
The MPs said that it is not appropriate for the government to introduce laws to encourage price increases where it should be stopped. Speaking in the committee, National Assembly MP Uday Bahadur Bohra said that it is not justified for the cement industry to artificially increase the price. He said that the increase in prices by creating artificial scarcity is a work of deceiving the consumers as a whole and argued that the price increase will not stop if the government repeals the provisions of the Black Market and Crime Punishment Act, 2032, which allows profit up to 20 percent.
Member of Parliament Durga Gurung said that in the market, 400 rupees per bag of cement is also 800 rupees in the market. She said that when the government-owned cement industry did not produce regularly, the private sector maintained a syndicate and said that not only cement, but all commodities have increased in the market.
MP Indira Devi Gautam said that the government's initiatives to control market prices are positive but not enough. She said that due to the increase in the price of cement, not only the builders, but also the common people were affected.
Member of Parliament Gautam said that the government needs to take initiatives to make prices comfortable for the consumers and questioned why the authority is load-shedding in the industry even though it is said that electricity is being produced.
MP Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achami said that the committee should be informed about which items have increased in cost in three months. He asked, how did the cost increase after the formation of the current government?
