The winter that lost the snow

High up in the mountains, it snowed fururu, snow fell fururu, Remembering the love of the country, the heart cries Dhururu, the heart cries Dhururu, Ha..ha..ha..my heart is crying Dhururu....

This song, sung by Babina Rai Kirati, is on the tongue of most Nepali people. As soon as it snows, those who make 'TikTok videos' choose this song .

It snowed in the Himalayas  Fururu... Another song with Raju Lama's voice is equally catchy . These songs help convey the glory of snow, winter and the Himalayan region of Nepal. However, with the arrival of winter, the high mountain areas, the mountains, the mountain roads and the plants were covered with a white blanket of snow.

has been pushed this year . It seemed that the month was almost over, but there was no sign of snow. Tiktok videos made of these songs stopped coming. If it is snowing, many people used to play with snow, and others also enjoyed the videos of them playing with snow!

This time the snow has disappeared in winter . There is also concern that the expressions of these songs will not become a story of Ekadesh for our future generations. Shailesh Pandey of Lazimpat, Kathmandu, who is waiting for the time to play in the snow this year as well, has the same concern.

'I like snow very much . As soon as it snowed, it was very fun, because we could play', he says, 'sometimes we used to go to Chandragiri hill, sometimes to Phulchoki hill, sometimes to Shivpuri hill . I remember those days very much, but this year I have to wait for the snow to fall.' When we were studying in college, it used to snow as soon as it was spring. We used to play in the snow with friends. Every year I went to play in the snow. It didn't fall this year!'

Kalpana Tamang, who lives in Koteshwar after Dhading, is also attracted by the snow. Who doesn't like snow? The joy of playing with the snow is different, but what to do, this year we didn't see any snow!', she said sadly.

The characters mentioned above are just some examples. More like them when will it snow this year ? While they are waiting for that, they are also very anxious to see the hills of the valley covered with snow and enjoy playing with the same snow.

There is a Bhaleshwar temple on the hill of Chandragiri. The main priest of the temple is Vidura Neupane . Last year, his tiktoks made with snow were very 'viral', but this year, that opportunity has not come yet. "This year it will not snow. Well! So far, there is no chance of snow', he said.

Prabhakar Khadka, market promoter and sales head of Chandragiri Hills Limited, recalled that around 20,000 tourists come to Chandragiri every day just to play in the snow.  The number of people who came to play in the snow in Chandragiri used to be large. Last year, the crowd of people riding the cable car was the same, about eight thousand people reached Chandragiri by walking," she said, "There used to be a lot of tourists coming to Chandragiri to play in the snow, but this year there is no snow. If it rained, the number of tourists would have increased suddenly!' Chandragiri, a beautiful snow-covered area near the

valley, has not been able to be set this time. It is still uncertain how long the valley dwellers will have to wait to go to Chandragiri after the snowfall. Ghanshyam Giri, chief of Chandragiri Municipality, says that the difference between the current snowfall and 50 years ago is worrying. "First of all, it was cold since October." The mountains were covered with snow. There was snow everywhere. Today, if you tell the new generation the same thing, they won't believe you. The snow could not be seen. The cold is disappearing more than before, he said.

The snow that falls as soon as the spring starts, but now it is already February, if it does not fall, the mayor of Giri is worried that there will be no snow after a few years. "First, the water that was kept outside froze! When we went to school, the water in the kholsakholsi would freeze and become like a plate . At that time, it was very fun to play with the frozen water', he says, 'the leaves of the trees were covered with snow and nothing could be seen . Now all these things seem like a dream.'

Not only in Chandragiri, but also the mountains that are sparkling with snow, Giri is surprised when they don't. He says, 'Annapurna Himal was covered with thick snow and looked white, it was shining brightly. Now it started to look black . In Kathmandu, it was difficult to see the people around when it was getting hot from the month of November. Now it doesn't feel like it used to. Hussu is not so visible. It used to be very cold. Now I have stopped experiencing cold.

Arjun Prasad Sivakoti, president of Kalinchok rural municipality in Dolakha district, also feels strange that Kalinchok has become snowless this winter. "Early on, there was such a thick snow that the snow stayed here for four months." Kalinchok would have been setamme,' he says,'lately the snow has been disappearing . He informed that the people here will not be able to see the snow later on! "Recently, when people came from Kathmandu to play in the snow, there used to be around 100,000 tourists. This time, because there is no snow, the domestic tourism has decreased", said President Sivakoti.  He says that due to climate change, there is not only the problem of lack of snow, but recently orange farming has stopped in Kalinchok.

Sanuraj Ghimire, the ward president of Godavari municipality-3, said that the number of domestic tourists visiting Phulchoki is very low these days. Phulchoki used to be covered with snow before. Many people came to see that too. There is no snow here today. Tourists would come if it snowed. If there is no snow, tourism development will also be affected," he said.

Ghimire has stopped snowing due to climate change and it will affect agriculture, water sources will dry up and  He urged the government to draw the attention of the international community to such problems caused by the climate at the local level, saying that there are problems such as the decline in tourism development.

Expectation of international cooperation

The government is now gearing up with the announcement of organizing the Everest Dialogue on May 2, 3 and 4. Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, Head of the Climate Management Department under the Ministry of Forests and Environment, says that the international community will be encouraged in the dialogue to solve the crisis of climate change faced by the mountainous countries.

'Nepal has a negligible role in causing carbon emissions, the main factor that causes climate change, but with the industrial development done by the international community, carbon emissions have increased and we have suffered the effects of climate change caused by it . "It's poison that I didn't eat," he says, "There is no snow in the mountains right now." Snow has stopped falling in our Himalayan regions. We ask for international cooperation by giving examples of such climate crisis. We will increase cooperation to reduce the impact of climate in mountain areas.

Dhakal said that since the sixth report of the International Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shown that the highest risk of climate change is in the mountain areas, especially the Himalayan areas and still in the mountainous areas of Nepal, it is necessary to emphasize on risk reduction. He said that Nepal is advocating to increase climate finance by saying that international climate finance support is necessary to reduce the impact of climate on the Himalayan region.

The minimum temperature will be higher than the average

According to the Department of Water and Meteorology, it has snowed only in some parts of the Himalayan region this time and due to the dry winter, it has not snowed in other areas. The department said that there was no snow in the winter due to the lack of rain. Kamal Ram Joshi, director general of the department, says that the forecast for this year's winter is less than average. The department has assessed the climate from last November 15th to the next February 16th and has forecast that there will be less than average rainfall across the country.   The projection of the

department has shown that along with the maximum, the minimum temperature will also be higher than the average. While La Niña is developing in the Pacific Ocean and  Bibhuti Pokharel, the spokesperson of the department, says that there will be less rain in winter this year as there will be lana until the beginning of the pre-monsoon period. The department has predicted that winter will be drier in January-February. According to the department, there is a possibility of more drought in the southern part of Koshi province and the eastern part of Madhesh province during winter.

Similarly, according to the climate assessment published by the department last December, it was predicted that there will be less rain than Sardar in most areas of Far West and Karnali, south of Lumbini. The department has estimated that the eastern and southern parts of Gandaki, Bagmati, western Madhesh and western areas of Koshi will receive less rain than Sardar. Considering the period up to February 16 as winter, it is possible that this winter will be dry and there will be a winter drought.

The threat of snow falling as the temperature rises

If the temperature of the world increases due to climate change, the risk of snow melting in the mountains and the gradual cessation of snow may increase, says climatologist Manjit Dhakal. As the temperature increases, the risk of mountain snow melting increases. Even in international forums, we have raised the issue of mountains by focusing on protecting mountains,' he said, 'to protect mountains and snow from climate risks, these issues should be raised continuously.' The 2024 State of Climate Report published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has highlighted the climate crisis. The average temperature from January to September 2024 has been shown to be 1.54 (+0.13) Celsius higher than before the industrial revolution.

Considering the year 1850 to 1900 as the base year, the temperature of the earth has increased by 1.4 degrees Celsius and the study has also shown that 1.3 degrees Celsius has been caused by man-made temperature rise. The WMO has issued a press release stating that there has been a significant increase in sea temperature, lack of ice, and large economic and human losses. The organization registered 2024 as the hottest year on record.

The organization concludes that the El Niño effect has further increased the temperature rise. According to the organization's study, the sea level has also increased and increased by 4.77 mm annually during the period from 2014 to 2023. Similarly, in 2023, the glacier lost 1.2 meters of water-equivalent ice and this is the highest ice melt event since 1953, the report states.

According to a study by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ISMOD), the impact of climate change in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region is three times higher than the world average. According to Isimod, in the decade from 2011 to 2020, glacier melting is 65 percent higher than before.

Next need: climate adaptation

Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti, a climate and disaster management expert, says that due to the change in the temperature of the sea surface and the resulting less rain and less snow, climate adaptation should be prioritized. "Despite the end of winter, only 9.2 percent of rain has fallen during this period this year, while 60 percent should have rained," he says, "Due to climate change, the sea level has increased in temperature and there has been less rain and less snow." Now it is necessary to find solutions to the problem and give priority to adaptation.

As the water resources are reduced when there is less snow, Upreti insists on improving the irrigation system, giving priority to climate adaptation-friendly agricultural systems, and building ponds in places to provide water to wild animals.
