The Press Council of Nepal has taken action against 38 YouTube channels that have kept the videos/pictures of the victim girl, the accused senior citizens, infants, and the victim's family under the name 'Amala Scandal' in Shivasatakshi Municipality of Jhapa.
The council informed through a statement on Tuesday that action was taken after the material was sensationalized by exaggerating the incident, asking unlimited questions to the victim's family, prioritizing insensitive debates and increasing viewership. "A letter has been sent to the Nepal Police (Cyber Bureau) to take action against YouTube channels that have seriously violated existing laws, rules, guidelines, codes of conduct, but have not kept their contact details and are not affiliated with the media," said the statement issued by Ramsharan Bohra, information officer, co-administrative officer of the council. In connection with this incident, the
council communicated the name, nationality, photos and video content of the victim and the accused in a manner that is detrimental to personal privacy, causing more pain to the victim's and victim's family and affecting public sensitivity, in accordance with Article 4(9), 5(2)(2), 5(4) and 5(13) of the Journalist Code of Conduct, 2073 (First Amendment, 2076), Women's Responsible Communication Directory, 2076. 5(8),(9), 4(a, b, e and j) of Senior Citizen Friendly Communication Guideline, 2078 and Section (3) of Personal Privacy Act, 2075 have taken action against 38 YouTube channels. The
council has asked to remove such content from YouTube and Facebook that is contrary to the values and norms of journalism, wrong, hate, malice in the society, incitement/rumor spread, and destroys social harmony. Press Council Nepal urges all those involved in the matter to plead guilty on the basis of accusations and suspicions, to convict unproven subjects, to harm personal privacy, to harm the self-esteem of women/senior citizens/children, with an apology, the statement said.
