Rajkumar Thapa, head of district coordination committee of Myagdi, accused of embezzling one and a half billion rupees from the Kumari cooperative society in Beni, Myagdi, has been arrested.
Myagdi police chief Bharat Shrestha informed Thapa over the phone that he was arrested at 5:30 this morning from his residence.
In the investigation report conducted by the office of cooperative registrar Pokhara a year ago, it was mentioned that one and a half billion rupees saved by common people in Thapa's scheme was embezzled.
It was pointed out in the report that the team including Thapa misused the funds of the cooperative for private schools and real estate purchases. He was elected Jesus chief from UML and he was not arrested yet. On January 28, 2007, the chairman of the cooperative, Yama Bahadur Rokka, submitted a written application to the office of the cooperative registrar and demanded to investigate the amount of the Kumari multi-purpose cooperative.
According to their demand, the office of cooperative registrar Pokhara authorized financial analyst Nirmal Gautam to investigate. Gautam's investigation report pointed out that the amount of 1 billion 49 million of the cooperative was embezzled in Thapa's main plan. On the basis of the
report, Thapa should be immediately arrested and the investigation should be started. Myagdi Police has informed that they have arrested Thapa and started investigation.
